Notes

John 2:1-12

“Miracles are not contrary to nature, but only contrary to what we know about nature.” - St. Augustine of Hippo

  • This miracle is only recorded in John.

  • Chances are this is a relative’s wedding.

  • Why did Mary ask Jesus to do something? Mary was anticipating Jesus' day of demonstration; possibly a day of vindication for her.

  • Jesus can provide for your needs.

  • Mary (an authority figure) called Jesus’ time out of him.

  • You don't get to choose your time!

  • The key to miracles is, “Whatever He tells you to do, do it!”

  • Fill the water pots with water: Jesus knew that if the servants shared in the work, then they also shared in the blessing. But because of their obedience to Jesus, they shared in the joy of the miracle.

  • 6 water pots + 30 gallons = 180 gallons or a turnaround

  • Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast: Major risk. Major reward; No risk. No reward.

  • Jesus made the wedding celebration even more enjoyable by providing the wine. Therefore, God is interested in your joy as well as your needs.

  • This took faith on behalf of the servants. Imagine how angry the master of the feast would be if they brought him water to taste! Yet in faith, they obeyed the word of Jesus

  • This beginning of signs in the Gospel of John is a miracle of conversion, from the old ways of law, ceremony and purification to the new life of Jesus.

  • Moses turned water into blood, showing that the Law results in death (Exodus 7:17-21). But Jesus' first miracle turned water into wine, showing the life and joy of His new work.

  • We could say that the water is like a relationship with God under the Old Covenant, and the wine is like a relationship with God under the New Covenant.

  • The wine came after the water; the New Covenant is after the Old Covenant.

  • The wine came from the water; the New Covenant is from the Old Covenant

  • The wine was better than the water; the New Covenant is better than the Old Covenant.

  • $320k for a bottle of the best wine

  • 5 bottles of wine per gallon. 100-150 bottles of wine per water pot. 6 water pots equal 600-900 bottles of wine. So roughly $192 mil - $288 mil worth of wine.

  • Every miracle is a revelation of his nature

  • The best wine came later on in the wedding...Some of you are later on in life. For you, God saved the best for last. Your best days start now! The best is yet to come!

  • If you filled a pot with water and put it on your front porch, it could sit there for a 1000 years and never turn into wine. Not only is this impossible, it misses the point of the miracle.

  • Jesus creates wine. He doesn’t speed up the natural process. This is a miracle of creativity.

  • Isaiah 43:18-18

  • Isaiah 42:9

  • Verse 11 - Your life is a sign

  • 65%-85% of humans are made of water.

  • You are the water that Jesus turned into wine

  • Only the servants, Mary, and a few disciples even knew what He had done.

  • The miracle was to introduce the disciples to His ability.

  • God is going to turn your ordinary life into an extraordinary life
