The Proof of God’s Goodness

Pastor DaVon discusses Hebrews 12:5-11, which teaches that God’s discipline reflects His goodness. While discipline can sometimes feel negative, Pastor DaVon encourages us to view it as a tool God uses to help us grow and strengthen our faith. He challenges us to approach correction with a positive attitude, recognizing it as a way to mature spiritually.

Notes

Proverbs 3:11-12 NLT

My child, don’t reject the Lord’s discipline, and don’t be upset when he corrects you. For the Lord corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights.

Hebrews 12:5-6 NLT

And have you forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you as his children? He said, “My child, don’t make light of the Lord’s discipline, and don’t give up when he corrects you. For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.”

  • Discipline isn’t about being rejected; it’s a sign of love.

  • Discipline is God’s way of showing you His goodness by guiding you to mature, not to punish you.

  • Discipline shows that God is invested in helping you grow and become who you are meant to be.

  • Don’t get offended when God corrects you.

Hebrews 12:7-8

As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as his own children. Who ever heard of a child who is never disciplined by its father? If God doesn’t discipline you as he does all of his children, it means that you are illegitimate and are not really his children at all.

  • God’s discipline is a sign of a real relationship with Him.

  • If God doesn’t discipline you, it would suggest that you are not truly His.

  • A loving parent wouldn’t neglect their child’s growth or allow them to continue on a harmful path.

Hebrews 12:9-10

Since we respected our earthly fathers who disciplined us, shouldn’t we submit even more to the discipline of the Father of our spirits, and live forever? For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness.

  • Contrasts earthly fathers with your heavenly Father.

  • Earthly parents discipline as best they know how, but God’s discipline is perfect and always for our benefit.

  • While earthly discipline is imperfect, God’s discipline has eternal purposes.

  • His goal is to make you more like Him

Hebrews 12:11

No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.

  • Accept discipline and allow it to shape your character

  • Discipline helps develop spiritual maturity

Proverbs 12:1 NLT

To learn, you must love discipline; it is stupid to hate correction.

  • Correction opens the door to Direction,

  • Direction opens the door to Protection,

  • Protection opens the door to Perfection.

  • Perfection is maturity or a finished product.

  • Correction - to restore to the right state of mind

  • As a result of Correction, I expect to become mature

Job 5:17

Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects; Therefore do not despise the chastening of the Almighty.

  • Say this:

  • I love correction

  • I want correction.

  • I am not prideful

  • I am not stubborn

  • I am humble

  • I am flexible

  • I am correctable

  • Correct me

  • Show me what adjustments and changes that I need to make and I will gladly make them.

How does God correct us?

2 Timothy 3:16-17

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 MSG
Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another—showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way. Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us.

  • Correction comes from the Word of God

Psalm 139:23 TPT

God, I invite your searching gaze into my heart. Examine me through and through; find out everything that may be hidden within me. Put me to the test and sift through all my anxious cares.

  • This prayer invites God into the deepest parts of your heart and mind.

  • Ask for correction. Look for correction

  • Are you correctable?

  • Are you willing to be corrected?

  • Are you open to correction?
