Notes
Do you find yourself repeatedly tempted by the same sins?
Do you struggle to feel accepted by God or by other people?
John 16:5-8
But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
When someone we love is near death, we usually don’t think that it is to our advantage that they go.
Convict = Convince
The Holy Spirit is the only one that can convince a sinner
Righteousness is the condition acceptable to God
Romans 3:23-26 NLT
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he makes sinners right in his sight when they believe in Jesus.
You are made right in the sight of God when you receive the gift of salvation
You were a sinner, you have been forgiven. Through faith in the finished works of Jesus, you are now righteous
2 Corinthians 5:21 NLT
For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
We are not righteous by being good and acting right. We are righteous through faith in Jesus.
We have confused righteousness with holiness
Righteous is what you are by faith in Jesus
Holiness involves your conduct
Do you feel righteous? Doesn’t matter
Romans 5:17 AMPC
For if because of one man’s trespass (lapse, offense) death reigned through that one, much more surely will those who receive [God’s] overflowing grace (unmerited favor) and the free gift of righteousness [putting them into right standing with Himself] reign as kings in life through the one Man Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).\
The Bill of Rights (righteousness) guarantees certain rights as a citizen of the US
You have a right to everything in the kingdom of God
Because of righteousness, you have more power over your life than satan had over you while you were still in your sin
You have been equipped to handle every situation that comes your way.
Jesus never showed a lack of faith or an abundance of faith. He knew his righteousness.
