I Choose You

In this message, Pastor DaVon initiates the discussion by reading a Bible verse from Genesis, describing how God regretted creating humanity due to their wickedness. The theme of adoption is discussed, and Pastor DaVon cites several verses from the Bible to highlight that God predestined humanity for adoption before the foundation of the world. Pastor DaVon discusses the need for faith in Christ Jesus to become a part of God's family and reminds us that we have a loving father who has adopted us and is responsible for taking care of us.

Notes

Genesis 6:5-6

Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.

  • Humanity was out of control

  • Humanity's intentions were only evil continually

  • The Lord regretted creating man

  • Humanity broke His heart

Ephesians 1:4-6

Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will “to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.

  • Predestined - Prepared beforehand

Galatians 4:4-6

But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”

  • Receive - to accept something offered

Romans 8:15-17

For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

  • Nothing can compete with the thrill of being adopted.

  • God’s unconditional love towards you and His adoption of you reminds you that you are not naturally God’s children.

  • Galatians 3:26 - For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

  • John 1:12 - But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name

Adoption:

  • Adoption is God’s grace gift towards us through salvation and a demonstration of His deep love for us.

  • the giving to anyone the name, place, and privileges of a son or daughter who is not a son or daughter by birth

  • to take responsibility for raising (someone else’s biological child) as one's own.

  • to select; to accept; to support

  • You can imagine someone helping or saving someone, but not going so far as to make him or her a part of their family.

  • Adoption is entirely an act of God’s uncoerced love.

  • God didn’t adopt us as His children because we were prettier than others, physically healthy, financial wealth, or potential.

  • God is attracted to the unappealing and the disenfranchised.

  • Nothing can compare with knowing that when you were fatherless, helpless, and hopeless, God rescued you from the gutter of sin and made you His child.

1 John 3:1

Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!

  • Jesus is no longer God's only son
